Reborn Dallas Sidekicks Join PASL for 2012-13 Season
5/1/12 - The Professional Arena Soccer League today announced that the Dallas Sidekicks have been granted membership for the 2012-13 season.
The ownership team of Ronnie Davis, Tatu, Sonny Williams, and Jim Tolbert announced at a press conference today that the Sidekicks will play in the Allen Event Center starting in November of 2012, in what will be the 20th season of Dallas Sidekicks arena soccer.
The Sidekicks also announced that MetroPCS will sponsor the team's jerseys.
The Sidekicks were one of the most venerable teams in all American soccer during their initial run from 1984 to 2004. Led by Tatu, Kevin Smith, David Doyle, Mike Powers, Krys Sobieski and others, the Sidekicks won four championships and regularly welcomed five-figure crowds to their games at Reunion Arena.
"The PASL could not be more excited to be able to add the Dallas Sidekicks to our growing stable of teams," said PASL Commissioner Kevin Milliken. "Not only are the Sidekicks an established brand, but the ownership group is so well acquainted with the market and the sport of arena soccer that we can envision a bright future in Allen."
Their "Never Say Die" playoff run in 1987 captured the imagination of Dallas sports fans. The Sidekicks improbable comeback in Game 7 of the 1987 MISL Championship saw them rally from down 3-1 with only 2:48 to go in the final period, and then win it in overtime, securing their first title.
In the PASL, the Sidekicks will be reunited with the Tacoma Stars and the San Diego Sockers, two longtime rivals.
Davis, the majority owner, will serve as President and CEO. Ronnie is a long-time sports executive in the DFW area, having worked for all four major professional sports franchises - the Cowboys, Mavericks, Rangers and Stars. Ronnie is an expert in building powerful partnerships between sports properties and businesses, and is the owner of sports marketing agency 4-R Marketing.
Williams is the longtime owner of the Dallas Sidekicks as well as former president and CEO of Minyard Food Stores. Sonny and his wife Gretchen are also minority owners of the Dallas Mavericks
Tatu, the Indoor Soccer Hall of Fame player-turned-coach, and Dallas icon, will once again serve as the Sidekicks Head Coach with the additional title of General Manager.
Tolbert, a longtime Sidekicks executive who will serve as Vice President of Ticketing, brings over 20 years of management and operational experience in the sports industry. His areas of focus include customer service, personnel and policy management, project management, budget oversight and event management.
Former Sidekicks Head Coach Gordon Jago said, "The memories of all those fun nights at Reunion Arena come flooding back and I cannot wait to cheer the Sidekicks on once again."
